Automotive and Industrial batteries are drained of acid and broken into lead-bearing, polypropylene and waste fractions. The acid is neutralised in an effluent treatment plant and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Polypropylene from battery casings is recycled into granules for sale into the industry. A mixture of lead-bearing scrap and fluxes is reduced in rotary furnaces to produce lead bullion.
The lead bullion provides the Refinery with recycled lead feedstock. The furnace exhaust gasses are cleaned through bag houses and all flue dusts are recycled. All process as well as storm water is collected and treated via the effluent treatment plant.
